🎁 Limited-time: + free California CDL Passenger & School Bus study guide
Corona-Norco Unified School District is the largest district in Riverside County and among the ten largest in California, enrolling over 53,000 students across 53 schools in Corona, Norco, and the surrounding communities. About 2,700 of those students ride a yellow bus every school day over 1.1 million miles a year. CNUSD owns the fleet and designs the routes, but it contracts the driving to First Student, and like most large operations it posts standing 'Now Hiring' listings because routes outnumber drivers.
Here is what most people get wrong: you do not need a commercial driver's license to apply. First Student hires you as a paid hourly trainee, trains you with no experience, and covers your CDL training, so you walk in with a clean record and the contractor handles the rest. This page lays out the real Corona-Norco process, what it pays, and how the contractor hiring actually works.

How to become a School Bus Driver in Corona-Norco
The path in order. The guide expands every step with the exact forms, links, and figures for Corona-Norco Unified.
Confirm you qualify before you apply
You must be at least 18, hold a valid California driver's license, and have a driving record that meets the district's safe-driver standards. A high school diploma or GED is preferred, not strictly required. Serious moving violations, DUIs, and recent license suspensions are disqualifying; an old speeding ticket generally is not.
Apply online for "School Bus Driver"
Corona-Norco contracts its bus service to First Student, so you apply through the contractor, not the district. Start at workatfirst.com and click through to apply; the direct job board is jobs.firststudentinc.com. Positions are posted open until filled, so apply promptly, with your last several years of work history ready.
Interview by phone, virtually, or at the yard
First Student offers phone and virtual interviews, or you can walk in to the First Student Corona yard (300 Buena Vista, Corona) Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Conditional job offers are advertised as available the same day as the interview. Bring your driver's license and, ideally, a copy of your driving record.
Clear the screenings after your offer
After a conditional offer you complete a CHP livescan fingerprint check submitted to the California DOJ and FBI, a DOT 5-panel drug test, a DOT physical and Medical Examiner's Certificate, and the California DL-51 medical exam. Who pays each pre-employment fee was not published by First Student, so confirm it before you start.
Earn your CDL at no tuition as a paid trainee
School Bus Drivers need a California Class B CDL with the P (passenger) and S (School Bus) endorsements, plus the CHP Special Driver Certificate (DL 45). First Student trains you in its own buses and the program satisfies the federal ELDT rule. Private CDL schools charge $2,000 to $4,000; First Student trains you free and pays you hourly while you learn, starting around four hours per school day.
Complete training and start your route
California's floor is a 40-hour original course (at least 20 hours classroom and 20 hours behind the wheel); First Student's program wraps those hours plus route training riding with trainers. You then move into a part-time, school-year route with Teamsters representation and First Student medical, dental, vision, and 401(k) benefits. Corona postings advertised a $5,000 sign-on bonus for certified drivers.

Corona-Norco Unified bus driver questions
Do I need a CDL to apply in Corona-Norco?
No. First Student, CNUSD's contractor, explicitly trains applicants without a CDL and covers the training cost, including the Class B license and the P and S endorsements. Holding a Class B already is a plus, but it is not required, and you earn a wage the whole time you train.
Who actually employs Corona-Norco bus drivers - the district or a contractor?
First Student. CNUSD owns the bus fleet and designs all of its routes in-house, but route drivers are hired, trained, and paid by First Student under contract. That means you apply at workatfirst.com, not through the district's own careers page.
What does the job pay, and is there a bonus?
First Student’s Corona postings list $31.50 to $39.00 per hour for certified drivers; new, uncertified drivers start lower (roughly $22.34 to $27.42). Postings also advertised a $5,000 sign-on bonus for certified drivers and $2,000 for new drivers - confirm any bonus is still in effect when you apply.
What's the free CDL study guide?
For a limited time, every district guide comes bundled with a free study guide for your state's CDL Passenger and School Bus endorsements — the two written tests you'll take. It covers exactly what's on those tests so you can pass the first time, at no extra cost.
Is this an official guide from the school district?
No. It is an independent preparation guide, not affiliated with or endorsed by any school district. It organizes the public information into one clear manual so you do not have to dig for it.
How do I get the guide after I pay?
Instantly. Checkout takes about a minute, then you get a download link on the screen and by email. It is a PDF you can open on any phone, tablet, or computer and keep.
