Los Angeles Unified School District is the second-largest district in the nation and the largest in California, enrolling roughly 373,500 students across 601 schools in Los Angeles and 25 surrounding communities. The district runs one of the biggest fleets in the country - about 2,700 bus routes a day covering 70,000 miles and carrying around 43,000 students - and like most large operations it has more routes than drivers.
You do not need a commercial driver's license to apply. LAUSD hires you as a paid Bus Driver Trainee at $26.91 an hour, trains you from a regular license to a Class B in about four to six weeks, and covers the training cost. The 2026 contract even made 8-hour bus driver positions permanent. This page lays out the real LAUSD process, the pay ladder from trainee to driver, and what the job actually involves.

How to become a School Bus Driver in Los Angeles
The path in order. The guide expands every step with the exact forms, links, and figures for Los Angeles USD.
Confirm you qualify before you apply
You must be at least 18, hold a valid California driver's license, and have a driving record that meets the district's safe-driver standards. A high school diploma or GED is preferred, not strictly required. Serious moving violations, DUIs, and license suspensions are disqualifying; no CDL is required to apply.
Apply online for "Bus Driver Trainee"
LAUSD posts openings on its careers portal at lausd.org/careers; trainee postings appear as "BUS DRIVER TRAINEE." Positions are open until filled, though individual requisitions carry end dates, so apply promptly and complete the full application, certifying your driving and employment history accurately.
Interview by phone, virtually, or at a yard
LAUSD offers virtual or phone interviews, or you can walk in to a Transportation compound - for example the San Julian Bus Garage at 1424 San Pedro St., Los Angeles - between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. The district operates multiple yards across its service area, so ask which one serves your area when you apply.
Clear the screenings after your offer
After a conditional offer you complete a CHP livescan fingerprint check submitted to the California DOJ and FBI, a DOT drug screen, a DOT physical and Medical Examiner's Certificate, and the California DL-51 medical exam. LAUSD pays for this pre-employment battery; the statutory certificate and fingerprint fees ($25 plus $32) may be applicant-paid, so confirm.
Earn your CDL as a paid trainee
You are hired as a Bus Driver Trainee at $26.91 an hour - a temporary, part-time, non-benefited role - while you train toward a California Class B CDL with the P (passenger) and S (School Bus) endorsements. The program satisfies the federal ELDT rule, and the district covers the training a private CDL school would charge $2,000 to $4,000 for.
Finish training and move into a regular assignment
Training runs about four to six weeks and wraps California's required 40-hour original course (20 hours classroom and 20 hours behind the wheel) plus route training. You then move into a regular role - Light Bus Driver at $35.37 an hour or Heavy Bus Driver at $37.14 - working 190 days a year at a minimum of 8 hours per day, with benefits, CalPERS, and SEIU Local 99 representation.

Los Angeles USD bus driver questions
Do I need a CDL to apply in Los Angeles?
No. LAUSD hires Bus Driver Trainees without a CDL, pays you $26.91 an hour while you train, and covers the training all the way to a Class B license with the P and S endorsements. Holding a Class B already is a plus, but it is not required.
What is the pay path from trainee to driver?
You start at $26.91 an hour as a temporary, part-time, non-benefited Bus Driver Trainee. Once you move into a regular assignment, a Light Bus Driver starts at $35.37 an hour and a Heavy Bus Driver at $37.14, with health benefits and a CalPERS pension that begin in the regular role.
How many hours and days will I work?
Regular bus drivers work a 10-month, 190-day school year at a minimum of 8 paid hours per day. The 2026 SEIU Local 99 agreement made 8-hour bus driver positions a permanent part of the contract, so the full-day schedule is now built in rather than optional.
What's the free CDL study guide?
For a limited time, every district guide comes bundled with a free study guide for your state's CDL Passenger and School Bus endorsements โ the two written tests you'll take. It covers exactly what's on those tests so you can pass the first time, at no extra cost.
Is this an official guide from the school district?
No. It is an independent preparation guide, not affiliated with or endorsed by any school district. It organizes the public information into one clear manual so you do not have to dig for it.
How do I get the guide after I pay?
Instantly. Checkout takes about a minute, then you get a download link on the screen and by email. It is a PDF you can open on any phone, tablet, or computer and keep.
