๐ Limited-time: + free Georgia CDL Passenger & School Bus study guide
Gwinnett County Public Schools is the largest district in Georgia, enrolling roughly 179,000 students across 142 schools, and the third-largest student transporter in the country. More than 133,000 students ride a bus each day. The district has not published a driver headcount, but its live posting lists a target of 650 openings and Transportation runs weekly virtual job fairs, which points to a large and continuing need for drivers.
Gwinnett does not follow the no-CDL template. It hires drivers who already hold a CDL learner's permit, so you study for the passenger and school bus endorsement tests before you enter the program. GCPS then provides the training, pays trainees their full hourly rate during the 70-90 hour program, and expects you to hold the full CDL before you finish it. This page lays out the real Gwinnett process, what it costs you, and what the job pays.

How to become a School Bus Driver in Gwinnett County
The path in order. The guide expands every step with the exact forms, links, and figures for Gwinnett County Public Schools.
Confirm you qualify before you apply
Georgia sets the minimum age for a School Bus Driver at 18 and no state driving-experience minimum, so GCPS sets its own standard. Your driving record must meet the district's safe-driver program. Serious moving violations, DUIs, and license suspensions are disqualifying. A high school diploma or GED is preferred, not required.
Get your CDL learner's permit
GCPS requires a CDL learner's permit when you apply, and you study for the passenger and school bus endorsement tests before entering the training program. Georgia DDS handles the permit, and the permit fees are yours. This is the main cost of entry, so budget for it before you apply.
Apply online and interview
Start at gcpsk12.org under Careers and click through to applitrack.com/Gwinnett. Search "Bus Driver" in the Transportation category. GCPS offers virtual and phone interviews and runs weekly virtual job fairs on Tuesdays plus in-person hiring events. Text @drive4gcps to 81010 for job fair notifications.
Clear the screenings after your offer
After a conditional offer you complete a GCIC and FBI fingerprint criminal record check, a DOT 5-panel drug screen, a DOT physical with a Medical Examiner's Certificate, and the annual GaDOE school bus driver physical. District materials list the drug screening and fingerprinting fees as waived; the DOT physical is typically applicant-paid. Confirm current fee policy at hire.
Complete paid training and earn the full CDL
GCPS publishes its training as 70-90 hours of classroom, range, and road instruction, valued at over $2,100, with trainees receiving their full hourly rate. The district runs three of its own driving ranges and tests drivers on site with its own certified examiners. You earn the Class B CDL with P and S endorsements before you finish the program.
Finish route training and start driving
Georgia requires at least 24 hours of GaDOE-approved initial training before you transport students. You then ride routes with experienced trainers until you know yours and drive solo. Full-time drivers work 185-day assignments of at least 6 hours a day. American Heart Association certification is provided during training.

Ask Transportation about any current incentive.
What benefits do GCPS School Bus Drivers get?
Benefited employees working 20 or more hours a week receive district-contributed medical, vision, dental, and short-term disability coverage and $15,000 in basic life insurance. Drivers may bring school-aged GCPS children on the bus in their zone.
What's the free CDL study guide?
For a limited time, every district guide comes bundled with a free study guide for your state's CDL Passenger and School Bus endorsements โ the two written tests you'll take. It covers exactly what's on those tests so you can pass the first time, at no extra cost.
