Henry County Schools is the eighth-largest district in Georgia, enrolling roughly 43,000 students across 53 schools in McDonough, Stockbridge, Locust Grove, Hampton, and the rest of Henry County. More than 20,000 of them ride a bus each day on a 325-bus fleet that logs 1.9 million miles a year. The transportation team numbers about 400 people, and the district recruits continuously, including an annual spring Bus Driver Job Fair. No 2026-27 vacancy figure is published.
You do not need a commercial driver's license to apply. HCS explicitly trains applicants without a CDL, pays them while they train, and runs the program in about two to four weeks. Every new hire starts as a Substitute Driver and is recommended for a full-time benefited position once the evaluation period is met. This page lays out the real Henry County process, what trainees are paid, and what the job pays after.

How to become a School Bus Driver in Henry County
The path in order. The guide expands every step with the exact forms, links, and figures for Henry County Schools.
Confirm you qualify before you apply
Georgia sets the minimum age for a School Bus Driver at 18 and no state driving-experience minimum, so HCS sets its own standard. Your driving record must meet the district's safe-driver program. Serious moving violations, DUIs, and license suspensions are disqualifying. A high school diploma or GED is preferred, not required.
Apply at Drive4Henry
Go to drive4henry.com, the district's bus driver hiring portal, and apply for the "Substitute Driver" trainee posting. Complete the full application and certify your driving and employment history accurately. Positions stay open until filled, so you can apply most of the year.
Meet the team and interview
HCS holds an annual spring Bus Driver Job Fair with on-site meetings with driver trainers and transportation staff. Interview details are not published, so call the transportation recruiting line at 770-957-2025. The Transportation Services West facility is at 135 Nail Drive, McDonough.
Clear the screenings after your offer
After a conditional offer you complete a GCIC and FBI fingerprint criminal record check, a DOT 5-panel drug screen, a DOT physical with a Medical Examiner's Certificate, and the annual GaDOE school bus driver physical. Your driving record is pulled, including any out-of-state history. District materials describe pre-employment costs as covered; confirm with Transportation at hire.
Earn your CDL in paid training
School Bus Drivers need a Class B CDL with the P (passenger) and S (school bus) endorsements. HCS trains you from a regular driver's license: about a week of classroom instruction, range and road training in air-brake buses, and the three-part skills test. Trainees earn $95 per day, about 5 hours, and the program satisfies the federal ELDT rule. Class dates are modular, so confirm the current schedule.
Move to full-time and start your route
Georgia requires at least 24 hours of GaDOE-approved initial training before you transport students. You then ride routes with experienced trainers until you drive solo and are recommended for a full-time benefited position. Full-time drivers work 178 days at 5 guaranteed hours a day, with State Health Benefit Plan coverage and a PSERS pension.
