๐ Limited-time: + free Maryland CDL Passenger & School Bus study guide
Charles County Public Schools enrolls roughly 28,162 students across 40 schools around La Plata, and more than 23,000 ride a bus each school day. The system is hybrid but contractor-heavy. A state task force counted 295 route buses, 31 owned by CCPS and 264 run by about 24 private contractors, and the in-house fleet has since grown from 22 to 69 buses. District drivers are CCPS employees. Contractor drivers work for the private firm, and contractors make up the majority of the driver workforce.
You do not need a commercial driver's license to apply, but the CCPS postings expect you to hold or secure a Class B CDL with passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements within a specified period, and the length of the training program is not published. Neither is a current hourly pay rate or whether trainee time is paid. This page covers the Charles County application path, including the contractor requirement, and the questions to ask before you commit.

How to become a School Bus Driver in Charles County
The path in order. The guide expands every step with the exact forms, links, and figures for Charles County Public Schools.
Confirm you qualify before you apply
Maryland sets the minimum age for School Bus Drivers at 21, with no state years-of-experience rule, and trainees may carry no more than two current points on their driving record. A high school diploma or GED is preferred, not required. DUIs, license suspensions, and serious moving violations are disqualifying.
Apply through CCPS and name a contractor
Start at ccboe.com/careers and the CCPS Transportation Office. The School Bus Driver Application requires you to commit to a specific contractor by full name, so research the contractors first. James H. Stone Jr. LLC in Waldorf (301-922-7692) is one contractor with a published facility. If you want a district-employed route instead, ask Transportation which openings are in-house.
Interview with Transportation or your contractor
Driver applications are processed at the CCPS Transportation Office, Annex 1, 5980 Radio Station Road, La Plata, MD 20646, phone 301-934-7262. Ask the questions that matter: the current hourly rate, whether any bonus is in effect, whether the route is full-time, the next training class start, and who pays for screenings.
Clear the screenings after your offer
After a conditional offer you complete a fingerprint criminal history check through the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, a DOT 5-panel drug screen, a DOT physical with a Medical Examiner's Certificate, and the annual Maryland school vehicle driver physical. Who pays for these was not published, so get the answer in writing.
Earn your CDL, and find out who pays
School Bus Drivers need a Class B CDL with the P (passenger) and S (School Bus) endorsements. CCPS postings expect you to hold or secure it within a specified period. Charles County has not published its training length, trainee pay, or who covers CDL training costs. A private CDL school runs roughly $2,000 to $4,000, so settle this before you start.
Complete training and start your route
Maryland requires at least 8 classroom hours and 9 behind-the-wheel hours before you transport students. After you pass the three-part skills test in a School Bus, you ride with a trainer until you know your route, then drive solo. Full-time operators move into 180-day assignments with a minimum of 4 hours per day.

Charles County Public Schools bus driver questions
Do I need a CDL to apply for a School Bus Driver job in Charles County?
No, you do not need one to apply. CCPS postings expect you to hold or secure a Class B CDL with P and S endorsements within a specified period, and the training program takes you through the license. The length of the program, trainee pay, and who covers the CDL costs are not published, so call the Transportation Department at 301-934-7262 before you plan around any of them.
Do Charles County School Bus Drivers work for the district or a contractor?
Both exist, and contractors employ the majority. About 24 private contractors run roughly 89 percent of route buses in the last state task force count, while CCPS runs the rest in-house and has grown that fleet from 22 to 69 buses. District drivers are CCPS employees represented by AFSCME Local 2989. Contractor drivers are paid by their contractor, and the CCPS application requires you to name the contractor you will drive for.
What does a Charles County School Bus Driver make?
No current hourly rate has been published for contractor-employed drivers, and CCPS does not publish its bus driver step schedule. District-employed drivers are on the AFSCME UA 2 support-staff scale, Grade 8-9, on a 10-month calendar. The task force noted that district drivers typically earn a lower direct hourly wage than contractor drivers but receive a more generous county retirement and benefits package. Ask for the exact rate in writing.
What's the free CDL study guide?
For a limited time, every district guide comes bundled with a free study guide for your state's CDL Passenger and School Bus endorsements โ the two written tests you'll take. It covers exactly what's on those tests so you can pass the first time, at no extra cost.
Is this an official guide from the School District?
No. It is an independent preparation guide, not affiliated with or endorsed by any School District. It organizes the public information into one clear manual so you do not have to dig for it.
How do I get the guide after I pay?
