๐ Limited-time: + free Maryland CDL Passenger & School Bus study guide
Frederick County Public Schools enrolls roughly 48,054 students across about 69 schools, and around 31,000 of them ride a bus every school day on a fleet of more than 400 buses. The district employs its own drivers, roughly 400 of them, and it has been running short. Management has put full staffing at 370 drivers and 100 assistants and has reported being about 15 drivers under that mark, with wages, hours, and the responsibility of the job cited as the reasons people leave.
You do not need a commercial driver's license to apply. FCPS runs its own training: 40 hours of classroom lessons plus behind-the-wheel work that takes you from a regular license to a Class B CDL with the passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements. Two things are not published, so ask before you plan around them: whether trainee time is paid, and who covers the pre-employment screenings. This page walks through the FCPS process step by step.

The path in order. The guide expands every step with the exact forms, links, and figures for Frederick County Public Schools.
Confirm you qualify before you apply
Maryland sets the minimum age for School Bus Drivers at 21, with no state years-of-experience rule, and trainees may carry no more than two current points on their driving record. A high school diploma or GED is preferred, not required. DUIs, license suspensions, and serious moving violations are disqualifying.
Apply online for Bus Driver
Apply through the FCPS Frontline portal at phl.applitrack.com/fcps/OnlineApp. Choose the Support Professional category, then Bus Driver. FCPS states it is always accepting applications for this category and recruits for training classes throughout the year. Complete the full application and certify your driving history accurately.
Interview with Transportation
Management, routing, dispatch, training, and payroll all run out of the Hayward Road Annex at 7446 Hayward Road, Frederick, MD 21702. Call 301-644-5366 with questions. Ask the five that matter: the current hourly rate, whether any bonus is in effect, whether the route is full-time, the next training class start, and who pays for screenings.
Clear the screenings after your offer
After a conditional offer you complete a fingerprint criminal history check through the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, a DOT 5-panel drug screen, a DOT physical with a Medical Examiner's Certificate, and the annual Maryland school vehicle driver physical. Who pays for these was not published, so ask Transportation before you apply.
Earn your CDL through the district's training
School Bus Drivers need a Class B CDL with the P (passenger) and S (School Bus) endorsements. FCPS trains applicants without a CDL, and its program satisfies the federal entry-level driver training rule. A private CDL school runs roughly $2,000 to $4,000, so the district route saves real money. FCPS has not published whether trainees are paid during training.
Finish training and take your route
The program covers 40 hours of in-class lessons, pre-trip inspection training, and behind-the-wheel work, with classroom training offered at least twice a month, usually three times. After you pass the three-part skills test in a School Bus, you ride with a trainer until you know your route, then drive solo. Full-time operators work about 180 days, with a minimum of 4 hours per day.
