Montgomery County Public Schools, based in Rockville, is the largest school district in Maryland, with roughly 159,700 students and more than 103,000 of them riding a School Bus every school day. The fleet runs about 1,300 buses out of five depots plus a specialized transportation unit, and the district keeps recruiting: it has held driver and attendant job fairs several times a year and pays an extra-route bonus of $25 in the morning and $25 in the afternoon, up to $50 a day.

You do not need a commercial driver's license to apply. MCPS states that applicants without a CDL can be trained to earn one, and its own program takes you from a regular license to a Class B CDL with Passenger and School Bus endorsements. Two details are not published, and this page says so plainly: the length of the training program and the training pay rate. The page covers the real Montgomery County process, the Maryland rules you must meet (including the minimum age of 21), and what the job pays.

How to become a School Bus Driver in Montgomery County

The path in order. The guide expands every step with the exact forms, links, and figures for Montgomery County Public Schools.

  1. Confirm you qualify before you apply

Maryland law sets the minimum age for a School Bus Driver at 21. An 18-year-old can hold a CDL but cannot drive a Maryland School Bus. Trainees may carry no more than two current points on the driving record, and serious moving violations, DUIs, and license suspensions are disqualifying. A high school diploma or GED is preferred, not required.

  2. Apply online for "Bus Driver"

MCPS posts openings on its Careers portal, reached from montgomeryschoolsmd.org. Search the title "Bus Driver"; trainee openings appear under that same title. Postings stay open until filled. Complete the full application and certify your driving and employment history accurately.

  3. Interview and get walk-in help

The Division of Transportation Services HR office at 16651 Crabbs Branch Way, Rockville, offers walk-in help Tuesdays through Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. MCPS also holds driver and attendant job fairs at that location several times a year. For hiring questions, call Transportation Employee Services at 240-740-6080.

  4. Clear the screenings after your offer

After a conditional offer you complete a fingerprint criminal history check through Maryland's Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, a DOT 5-panel drug screen, and a DOT physical with a Medical Examiner's Certificate. Maryland requires the school vehicle driver physical annually, not on the federal two-year cycle. The district hires you, so you are an MCPS employee on the MCPS payroll, not a contractor's.

  5. Earn your CDL through the MCPS training program

You need a Class B CDL with the P (Passenger) and S (School Bus) endorsements. MCPS runs its own training: classroom, range and road driving, and the three-part skills test, administered on site, in air-brake School Buses. The program satisfies the federal entry-level driver training rule. MCPS says training is paid once you earn your CDL learner's permit with the proper endorsements; the dollar rate and program length are not published, so confirm both with Transportation at 240-740-6069.

  6. Ride with a trainer, then drive your route solo

Maryland requires at least 8 hours of classroom and 9 hours of behind-the-wheel preservice instruction before you transport students, and 6 hours of in-service instruction every year after. New drivers ride routes with experienced trainers until they know their assignment, then drive solo. Benefits include paid school holidays, 4 days of personal leave, and 10 days of sick leave.

Montgomery County Public Schools bus driver questions

Do I need a CDL to apply to drive for MCPS?

No. MCPS states that applicants without a CDL can be trained to earn a Commercial Driver's License. The district teaches you, administers the CDL test on site, and requires a Class B with Passenger and School Bus endorsements by the time you drive students. You must be at least 21 and meet the district's driving-record standards.

How much do MCPS bus drivers make, and what are the hours?

The district's starting figure is $26.47 per hour once bus operator training is successfully completed, within an FY26 pay scale of $23.74 to $37.78 per hour. Drivers work a 10-month year of about 180 days on a split shift, with a minimum of 4 hours per day. Drivers can request a minimum of 55 scheduled hours every two weeks, and they earn $25 per extra morning run and $25 per extra afternoon run, up to $50 a day.

Do trainees get paid during MCPS training?

MCPS states that training is paid once you have earned your CDL learner's permit with the proper endorsements. The pay rate during training is not published, and neither is the program length in weeks. Call Transportation at 240-740-6069 to get both before you plan around them. No sign-on bonus for new drivers appears on the district's official pages.

What's the free CDL study guide?

For a limited time, every district guide comes bundled with a free study guide for your state's CDL Passenger and School Bus endorsements โ€” the two written tests you'll take. It covers exactly what's on those tests so you can pass the first time, at no extra cost.

Is this an official guide from the School District?

No. It is an independent preparation guide, not affiliated with or endorsed by any School District. It organizes the public information into one clear manual so you do not have to dig for it.

How do I get the guide after I pay?

Instantly. Checkout takes about a minute, then you get a download link on the screen and by email. It is a PDF you can open on any phone, tablet, or computer and keep.
