๐ Limited-time: + free Nevada CDL Passenger & School Bus study guide
Washoe County School District, anchored by Reno, is the second-largest district in Nevada, with roughly 59,700 students across about 116 schools. About 20,000 of them ride a School Bus each day on roughly 265 routes, using a fleet of 358 district buses and a workforce of 297 drivers out of two Reno yards. The district's Transportation page carries a Now Hiring banner, and WCSD's own training division is state-authorized to run CDL skills testing on district premises.
You do not need a commercial driver's license to apply. WCSD states that applicants without a CDL can be trained to get one, and it runs the training itself, including the skills test. Two details are not published, and this page says so plainly: whether trainees draw an hourly wage during training, and how long the program runs. This page covers the real Washoe County process, the Nevada rules you must meet, and what the job pays.

How to become a School Bus Driver in Washoe County
The path in order. The guide expands every step with the exact forms, links, and figures for Washoe County School District.
Confirm you qualify before you apply
Nevada sets no state driving-experience minimum, but the practical age floor is 21; a CDL can be held at 18 for intrastate driving, but not the passenger privilege the P endorsement requires. Serious moving violations, DUIs, and license suspensions are disqualifying. A high school diploma or GED is preferred, not required.
Apply online for "Bus Drivers"
WCSD posts openings on its careers page at washoeschools.net/careers, which routes into its Frontline/AppliTrack hiring system. Search the title "Bus Drivers". Positions stay open until filled. Complete the full application and certify your driving and employment history accurately.
Interview by phone, virtually, or in person
The district offers virtual and phone interviews, and you can walk in to the Transportation Department at 330 Doubleback Road, Reno, between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to inquire. A second yard operates at 684 Geiger Grade Road, Reno. For hiring questions, call Human Resources at 775-348-0321.
Clear the screenings after your offer
After a conditional offer you complete a fingerprint criminal record check through the Nevada Central Repository and the FBI, repeated at least every 5 years, plus a DOT 5-panel drug screen and a DOT physical with a Medical Examiner's Certificate. Nevada also uses the NTSB physical performance tests: steps, throttle and brake, door, hand controls, emergency exit, and a 100-pound drag or carry. The fingerprint fee is candidate-paid; confirm who pays the physical and drug screen.
Earn your CDL through the WCSD training program
You need a Class B CDL with the P (Passenger) and S (School Bus) endorsements. WCSD runs its own training: classroom first, then range and road driving, with CDL skills testing conducted on district premises. The program satisfies the federal entry-level driver training rule. Whether trainee time is paid and how many weeks the program runs are not published, so confirm both with Transportation at 775-677-5454.
Finish the state course and drive your route
Nevada requires a State Board-approved training course with a state-certified trainer, and every driver passes the district's annual written test at 80 percent. New drivers ride routes with experienced trainers until they know their assignment, then drive solo on a 180-day schedule. Employees regularly scheduled 27.5 or more hours a week receive full benefits, and WESP represents drivers.
