๐ Limited-time: + free North Carolina CDL Passenger & School Bus study guide
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is the second-largest district in North Carolina, enrolling roughly 147,000 students across 185 schools. Its transportation division runs the state's largest school bus fleet: about 1,100 buses operating each day, 25,500 bus stops, and more than 17.6 million miles a year, carrying over 71,000 students daily. CMS drivers are district employees hired, trained, and paid directly by the district, and hiring is ongoing, with recruiting events running through the fall.
You do not need a commercial driver's license to apply. CMS advertises paid training for applicants with no bus driving experience, with trainees starting at $20.04 an hour while they work toward a Class B CDL with the Passenger and School Bus endorsements and North Carolina School Bus Driver Certification. The district has not published how many weeks training lasts or who pays the physical, fingerprints, and drug screen, so this page flags what to confirm. It covers the Charlotte process, what the job pays, and what to ask before you start.

How to become a School Bus Driver in Charlotte-Mecklenburg
The path in order. The guide expands every step with the exact forms, links, and figures for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.
Confirm you qualify before you apply
North Carolina law sets the minimum age at 18 and requires at least six months of licensed driving experience (G.S. 115C-245). CMS prefers a high school diploma or GED. Your record must meet the district's safe-driver standards, and North Carolina certification allows no DWI conviction in five years and no more than one moving-violation conviction in the past 12 months.
Apply through the Become-a-Driver page
CMS posts School Bus Driver openings on its Become-a-Driver page at cmsk12.org/operations/transportation-services/become-a-driver, where the Apply Now button routes to the hiring system. The posting title is "Bus Driver." CMS also holds in-person driver hiring events at bus garages and libraries around the county, listed on the same page.
Interview and ask about the details
CMS offers phone and virtual interviews, and you can walk in to a Transportation compound between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to ask questions. Headquarters is at 4335 Stuart Andrew Blvd in Charlotte. Ask for the current hourly rate, the next training class date, and who pays the screenings.
Clear the screenings after your offer
After a conditional offer you complete a fingerprint criminal history check through the State Bureau of Investigation, a pre-employment DOT drug screen, and a DOT physical with a Medical Examiner's Certificate. North Carolina law bars a board from charging you for the fingerprint check. CMS has not published who pays for the physical and drug screen, so ask Transportation before you apply.
Earn your CDL and state certificate in paid training
CMS pays trainees $20.04 an hour while they earn a Class B CDL with the P (passenger) and S (School Bus) endorsements. Applicants must have or be able to obtain a commercial learner's permit. North Carolina also certifies every School Bus Driver through the DMV: a 3-day classroom course, four knowledge tests at 80 percent, behind-the-wheel training, three skills tests, and a Physical Performance Standards Test.
Finish route training and start driving
After testing you ride routes with an experienced driver until you know yours, then drive solo. Full-time drivers work about 180 days a year with summers off, and certification renews every three years. CMS has not published how many weeks the training program lasts, so ask for the next class start date.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools bus driver questions
Do I need a CDL to apply to drive a School Bus for CMS?
No. CMS advertises paid training for applicants with no bus driving experience and hires you before you hold a commercial license. You need to have or be able to obtain a commercial learner's permit, then earn a North Carolina Class B CDL and your state School Bus Driver Certification during training.
How much do CMS School Bus Drivers make, and what are the benefits?
CMS advertises a starting rate of $20.04 per hour, and trainees start at that rate during paid training. Lead Bus Driver postings start higher. The role is a 10-month, roughly 180-day schedule with a minimum of 4 hours per day. Benefits include NC State Health Plan medical and prescription coverage, and permanent full-time employees working at least 30 hours a week join the TSERS state pension.
Does CMS offer a hiring bonus, and is there a union?
No sign-on, training, or retention bonus appears on the Become-a-Driver page or in current postings, so ask Employee Services whether any incentive is in effect. No union represents CMS drivers, because North Carolina law voids public-sector union contracts. CMS does run a non-union driver committee with representation from all 14 service areas, where drivers raise concerns with transportation leadership.
What's the free CDL study guide?
For a limited time, every district guide comes bundled with a free study guide for your state's CDL Passenger and School Bus endorsements โ the two written tests you'll take. It covers exactly what's on those tests so you can pass the first time, at no extra cost.
Is this an official guide from the School District?
No. It is an independent preparation guide, not affiliated with or endorsed by any School District. It organizes the public information into one clear manual so you do not have to dig for it.
How do I get the guide after I pay?
Instantly. Checkout takes about a minute, then you get a download link on the screen and by email. It is a PDF you can open on any phone, tablet, or computer and keep.
