Union County Public Schools, anchored by Monroe, is the sixth-largest district in North Carolina, enrolling roughly 40,870 students across 53 schools. About 28,228 of them are assigned bus riders, carried on 207 buses plus 9 routed vans, with 61 double runs in the morning and 81 in the afternoon. Demand for drivers runs ahead of supply: the superintendent told the Board of Education that the district had 21 driver vacancies and 13 drivers still waiting on DOT training before becoming active.

You do not need a commercial driver's license to apply. UCPS hires from zero through a paid Bus Driver Trainee track, and its drivers are district employees, not contractors. Trainees start at $17.29 an hour, ride along as a safety monitor, and work toward licensing. The district has not published how many weeks the course runs or who covers the physical and drug screen, so you confirm both with Transportation up front. This page covers the real Union County process, what it costs you, and what the job pays.

How to become a School Bus Driver in Union County

The path in order. The guide expands every step with the exact forms, links, and figures for Union County Public Schools.

  1. Confirm you qualify before you apply

North Carolina law sets the floor at age 18 with at least six months of licensed driving experience. The district also requires a driving record that meets its safe-driver standards, and serious moving violations, DUIs, and license suspensions are disqualifying. A high school diploma or GED is preferred, not strictly required. You must be able to obtain and keep a North Carolina Class B CDL with P and S endorsements, but you do not need it before you apply.

  2. Apply online for Bus Driver or Bus Driver Trainee

Start at applitrack.com/ucps/onlineapp, reached through the "Apply Now!" link on the UCPS transportation hiring page. Current titles include School Bus Driver for fully licensed applicants and Bus Driver Trainee for applicants with no CDL yet. Positions stay open until filled. Complete the full application and certify your driving and employment history accurately.

  3. Interview by phone, virtually, or in person

UCPS offers virtual and phone interviews. You can also walk in to the Transportation office and bus garage at 3319 Goldmine Road in Monroe between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to inquire, or pre-apply online before a career fair. UCPS holds periodic non-instructional career fairs with a Transportation meet-and-greet.

  4. Clear the screenings after your offer

After a conditional offer you complete a fingerprint criminal history check, a DOT 5-panel drug screen, and a DOT physical with a valid Medical Examiner's Certificate. Your driving record, including any out-of-state history, is checked against district standards. Under G.S. 115C-332 the board, not you, pays for the criminal check and fingerprinting. The district has not published who covers the physical and drug screen, so ask Transportation at 704-296-3015 before you schedule them.

  5. Earn your CDL as a paid Driver Trainee

School Bus Drivers in Union County need a Class B CDL with the P (passenger) and S (School Bus) endorsements. Trainees are paid, work under direct supervision as a safety monitor while observing a driver, and work toward licensing. Once you hold a Commercial Learner's Permit you may drive a school bus with a licensed driver and no students on board. In-house classes run multiple days, and the district's program satisfies the federal entry-level driver training rule. The current class schedule is not published, so confirm it with Transportation.

  6. Finish route training and start driving

After licensing you ride routes with experienced trainers until you know yours, then drive solo. Full-time drivers work about 180 days a year, minimum 6 hours a day, with summers, holidays, and school breaks off. All new hires serve a six-month probationary period. The district lists paid time off, paid training, and health, dental, vision, and life coverage for full-time drivers, plus state retirement.

Union County Public Schools bus driver questions

Do I need a CDL to apply to drive for Union County Public Schools?

No. UCPS runs a paid Bus Driver Trainee track for applicants with no CDL yet. The district states that applicants without a CDL can be trained to get one, and you earn the Class B license with P and S endorsements through its program.

How much do Union County School Bus Drivers make?

The district's hiring page lists $17.29 per hour as the starting and trainee rate, with up to $18.50 per hour including incentives, though the incentive amount is not published. UCPS does not publish a full step schedule, so confirm the live rate on the posting. Drivers work about 180 days a year at a minimum of 6 hours per day, with field trips and activity runs available for extra hours.

Does UCPS pay a sign-on bonus?

No sign-on bonus for new drivers appears in the district's materials. Driver Trainees are eligible for a monthly perfect attendance bonus, though the amount is not published. UCPS also pays a $200 recruitment award to the current employee who refers a new driver who completes training and drives for 60 consecutive school days, which goes to the referrer, not the new driver. Ask Transportation what is in effect when you apply.

What's the free CDL study guide?

For a limited time, every district guide comes bundled with a free study guide for your state's CDL Passenger and School Bus endorsements โ€” the two written tests you'll take. It covers exactly what's on those tests so you can pass the first time, at no extra cost.

Is this an official guide from the School District?

No. It is an independent preparation guide, not affiliated with or endorsed by any School District. It organizes the public information into one clear manual so you do not have to dig for it.

How do I get the guide after I pay?

Instantly. Checkout takes about a minute, then you get a download link on the screen and by email. It is a PDF you can open on any phone, tablet, or computer and keep.
