๐ Limited-time: + free North Carolina CDL Passenger & School Bus study guide
Wake County Public School System, anchored by Raleigh, is the largest school district in North Carolina and the 14th largest in the country, enrolling roughly 161,000 students across 203 schools. Nearly 90,000 registered riders are served by about 564 planned daily routes, and the district reported 605 filled driver positions in 2025 with only a 41-driver cushion over planned routes. In a system that size, qualified drivers are always in demand.
The WCPSS careers page puts it plainly: a CDL or permit is required, but the district pays you to get it. You do not arrive licensed. You are hired as a paid trainee, and the district covers onboarding costs up front, including the physical exam, DMV CDL training, testing, and licensure. WCPSS drivers are district employees; a separate group of vendor drivers covers special-needs and similar routes and works for the vendors, not the district. This page covers the real Wake County process, what it costs you, and what the job pays.

How to become a School Bus Driver in Wake County
The path in order. The guide expands every step with the exact forms, links, and figures for Wake County Public School System.
Confirm you qualify before you apply
North Carolina law sets the floor at age 18 with at least six months of licensed driving experience. The district also requires a driving record that meets its safe-driver standards, and serious moving violations, DUIs, and license suspensions are disqualifying. A high school diploma or GED is preferred, not strictly required. You must be able to obtain and keep a North Carolina Class B CDL with P and S endorsements, and the district pays for you to get it.
Apply online for "School Bus Driver"
Start at careers.wcpss.net and search "School Bus Driver." Postings stay open until filled, and the careers page also offers an interest form for recruiter follow-up. Complete the full application and certify your driving and employment history accurately.
Interview by phone, virtually, or in person
WCPSS offers virtual and phone interviews. You can also walk in to a Transportation compound between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to inquire: 1551 Rock Quarry Road in Raleigh, or 111 Corning Road in Cary. Come ready to talk about reliability and working with students.
Clear the screenings after your offer
After a conditional offer you complete a fingerprint criminal history check, a DOT 5-panel drug screen, and a DOT physical with a valid Medical Examiner's Certificate. Your driving record, including any out-of-state history, is checked against district standards. Under G.S. 115C-332 the board, not you, pays for the criminal check and fingerprinting, and WCPSS pays onboarding costs up front, including the physical exam.
Earn your CDL as a paid trainee
School Bus Drivers in Wake County need a Class B CDL with the P (passenger) and S (School Bus) endorsements. WCPSS pays you $20 an hour while you train and covers DMV CDL training, testing, and licensure. Expect about a week of classroom instruction before you get behind the wheel, then range and road training in air-brake-equipped buses, which satisfies the federal entry-level driver training rule. You pass the knowledge tests, the three-part skills test, and the Physical Performance Standards Test.
Finish route training and start driving
Expect 6 to 8 weeks from hire until you perform normal driving duties. You ride routes with experienced trainers until you know yours, then drive solo. Full-time drivers work about 180 days a year with summers, holidays, and school breaks off and no weekends. Full-time drivers receive the State Health Plan, NC Retirement, vacation time, and holiday pay.
