The School District of Philadelphia is the eighth-largest district in the country and the largest in Pennsylvania, with roughly 114,500 students in 218 district-run schools. About 33,000 students ride yellow buses or other school vehicles each day. Zum's 2026-27 contract alone covers a minimum of 200 routes and about 330 district, charter, and non-public schools. The district is hiring, and so are its contractors: Zum, First Student, Durham, Holcomb, and Philadelphia Transportation.

Philadelphia runs a hybrid model. The district operates its own small fleet from the Passyunk Garage and hires district-direct drivers, but most routes belong to contractors, who hire, train, and pay their own people. Either path lets you apply without a commercial driver's license. The district's School Bus Driver posting hires every candidate as a trainee at $16 an hour until credentials are verified. This page lays out both paths, what each pays, and what to confirm before you choose.

How to become a School Bus Driver in Philadelphia

The path in order. The guide expands every step with the exact forms, links, and figures for The School District of Philadelphia.

  1. Choose your path: district-direct or contractor

The district hires its own drivers out of the Passyunk Garage, 6421 Passyunk Ave, and those drivers are represented by SEIU 32BJ (District 1201). Contractors Zum, First Student, Durham, Holcomb, and Philadelphia Transportation hire separately and set their own pay, benefits, and training. Compare the posted rates and trainee terms before you apply.

  2. Confirm you qualify

Pennsylvania sets 18 as the minimum age to drive a school bus, with no state minimum for driving experience. Each employer sets its own. You need a valid driver's license and a record that meets safe-driver standards. DUIs, serious moving violations, and license suspensions are disqualifying. A high school diploma or GED is preferred, not required.

  3. Apply online and interview

Apply for "School Bus Driver" at jobs.philasd.org for the district, or on the contractor's own portal. Interviews run by phone or virtually, and you can also walk into a Transportation compound between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to inquire. Check the postings for hiring events, since contractors have held their own.

  4. Clear the screenings after your offer

A conditional offer triggers Pennsylvania's three clearances (Act 34 State Police record, Act 151 child abuse history, Act 114 FBI fingerprints), a DOT 5-panel drug screen, a DOT physical, and the annual DL-704 school bus driver physical. Who pays for the clearances was not published for the district or the contractors, so ask before you budget.

  5. Earn your CDL as a paid trainee

School Bus Drivers need a Class B CDL with the P (passenger) and S (School Bus) endorsements. The district hires every candidate as a trainee at $16 an hour until credentials are verified and the road test is complete. First Student posts $20 an hour for training; Zum has not published its training rate. Private Class B tuition runs $2,000 to $4,000, and the employer-provided path costs you $0 in tuition.

  6. Finish route training and drive solo

After the three-part skills test in a School Bus, you ride routes with a trainer until you know yours, then drive solo. Pennsylvania requires at least 20 hours of initial training (14 classroom, 6 in-bus), plus CPR and first aid, and a recertification every four years. Plan on about six weeks from start to license; Philadelphia employers do not publish a training length, so confirm yours.

The School District of Philadelphia bus driver questions

Do I need a CDL to drive a School Bus in Philadelphia?

No. You can apply with a regular driver's license. The district's School Bus Driver posting hires all candidates as trainees at $16 an hour until credentials and endorsements are verified and the road test is complete. Contractors also train applicants without a CDL, though their trainee pay varies and some do not publish it. Confirm the trainee rate before you accept.

What does a School Bus Driver in Philadelphia earn?

It depends on the employer. Zum's most recent Philadelphia press release posts $30.23 to $37.33 per hour, a contractor figure. The district's trainee rate is $16 an hour, and its post-trainee hourly rate was not published. Contractors guarantee 5 hours per day, or 25 per week, once you are driving. The school-year calendar means summers, holidays, and breaks off.

Are there sign-on bonuses for Philadelphia School Bus Drivers?

None are confirmed for 2026-27. The district's posting advertises paid trainee status, not a cash bonus. First Student lists a $2,000 sign-on on its general careers page, but it was not confirmed on the Philadelphia posting, and Zum advertised no sign-on in its Philadelphia materials. Ask the employer directly whether any incentive is in effect before you accept an offer.

What's the free CDL study guide?

For a limited time, every district guide comes bundled with a free study guide for your state's CDL Passenger and School Bus endorsements โ€” the two written tests you'll take. It covers exactly what's on those tests so you can pass the first time, at no extra cost.

Is this an official guide from the School District?

No. It is an independent preparation guide, not affiliated with or endorsed by any School District. It organizes the public information into one clear manual so you do not have to dig for it.

How do I get the guide after I pay?

Instantly. Checkout takes about a minute, then you get a download link on the screen and by email. It is a PDF you can open on any phone, tablet, or computer and keep.
