๐ Limited-time: + free Tennessee CDL Passenger & School Bus study guide
Sumner County Schools, anchored by Gallatin, is the eighth-largest district in Tennessee, with more than 30,000 students across 50-plus schools. About 18,930 students ride a bus, on a fleet of 233 buses (185 running routes daily) covering 771 routes and 14,530 stops a day. About 200 transportation employees, including drivers, attendants, and substitutes, work out of one central facility on Airport Road. The district has not published a vacancy count, but a fleet this size hires continuously and posts School Bus Driver openings on its job board.
SCS does not require a CDL to apply. Its Transportation Department is on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry, runs the entry-level driver training in-house including 24 hours behind the wheel, and does its own CDL skills testing. What the district has not published is whether trainee hours are paid, so ask before you plan around it. Tennessee also sets the strictest entry standard in the country: age 25 and five years of unrestricted driving. This page covers the process, the pay, and what to ask.

How to become a School Bus Driver in Sumner County
The path in order. The guide expands every step with the exact forms, links, and figures for Sumner County Schools.
Confirm you meet Tennessee's age and driving standard
Tennessee law requires School Bus Driver applicants to be at least 25 and to have five consecutive years of unrestricted driving experience. The age floor drops to 23 for honorably discharged veterans, National Guard or reserve members, and licensed teachers employed by a school district. A high school diploma or GED is preferred, and your driving record must meet the district's safe-driver standards.
Apply online for "School Bus Driver"
Start at sumnerschools.org/careers and click "View Open Positions," which opens the Munis Self Service job board. Search "School Bus Driver." SCS hires Regular Ed Bus Drivers, Special Ed Drivers, Full-time Swing Drivers, and substitutes. Complete the full application and certify your driving and employment history accurately. Do not use the sumnerjobs.hrmplus.net site; that belongs to Sumner County, Washington.
Interview with Pupil Transportation supervisors
Department supervisors interview new hires and run all training. The Transportation facility is at 1500 Airport Road in Gallatin, and hiring questions go to (615) 452-1520. Ask for the current starting rate, whether trainee hours are paid, the weekly hours on the posting, and the next training class start.
Clear the screenings after your offer
After a conditional offer you complete a TBI and FBI fingerprint check, the county board of education's criminal-offense investigation for your driver certificate, a DOT drug screen, a DOT physical, and Tennessee's annual school bus driver physical and mental exam. A DUI, vehicular assault, or controlled-substance conviction within the past five years bars the certificate. Confirm with Transportation who pays for screening.
Train in-house for your Class B CDL with P and S endorsements
SCS trains applicants without a CDL from scratch, entirely in-house. You complete federal entry-level driver training, including 24 hours behind the wheel, and once you meet every requirement your supervisor schedules the CDL test, which the district administers itself. You need the Class B with Passenger and School Bus endorsements plus the Tennessee county board driver certificate. Total training length is not published.
Finish route training and start solo
New drivers ride routes with experienced trainers until they know their assignment, then drive solo. SCS drivers are district employees with the TCRS pension and district health plans. Yearly DOT physicals, state training through Infinit-I, and CPR and first aid training are part of the job. There is no union, so the board sets pay and working conditions.

Sumner County Schools bus driver questions
Do I need a CDL to apply to drive for Sumner County Schools?
No. SCS states that applicants without a CDL can be trained to earn one, and the Transportation Department delivers the entry-level driver training and CDL skills test in-house. Federal rules require 24 hours behind the wheel before the test is scheduled. The district has not published whether trainee hours are paid, so ask when you apply.
How much do Sumner County School Bus Drivers make?
The most recent district-reported starting rate is $21.00 per hour. It predates the 2025-26 raises, when the district gave every classified employee a 2-step increase, so the current rate may be higher. SCS does not publish a driver step schedule, and no sign-on or retention bonus is documented. Confirm the live rate on the Munis job board posting before you apply.
What are the hours and work year for Sumner County School Bus Drivers?
The job is a 10-month, roughly 180-day position with a minimum of 5 hours per day, built around split shifts: a morning route, a midday gap, and an afternoon route. There are no weekends or late-night shifts on regular routes, and summers and school breaks are off. Field trips and activity runs are available for extra hours.
What's the free CDL study guide?
For a limited time, every district guide comes bundled with a free study guide for your state's CDL Passenger and School Bus endorsements โ the two written tests you'll take. It covers exactly what's on those tests so you can pass the first time, at no extra cost.
