Austin Independent School District serves Travis County and is the eighth-largest district in Texas, with about 66,000 students across 116 schools. Transportation moves nearly 23,000 students a day on a fleet of nearly 500 buses, run by roughly 650 transportation employees out of three bus terminals. The district recruits drivers year-round, so the demand for new operators is steady.

You do not need a commercial driver's license to apply. Austin ISD operates its own bus driver training program, hires you without a CDL, pays you while you train, and covers the cost of the license. New hires must complete the Class B CDL, the Texas certification course, and the district's own program within 90 days of hire. This page lays out the real Austin ISD process, what it costs you, and what the job pays.

How to become a School Bus Driver at Austin ISD

The path in order. The guide expands every step with the exact forms, links, and figures for Austin ISD.

  1. Confirm you qualify before you apply

Texas sets the minimum age for a School Bus Driver at 18 and leaves the driving-experience minimum to each district, so confirm Austin ISD's standard when you apply. You need a driving record that meets the district's safe-driver standards; a high school diploma or GED is preferred. DUIs, suspensions, and serious violations are disqualifying.

  2. Apply online for "Part Time Bus Driver"

Applications go through the district's AppliTrack (Frontline) system at applitrack.com/austin. Trainee openings post under the title "Part Time Bus Driver." Positions stay open until filled, so you can apply through most of the year.

  3. Interview by phone, virtually, or at a bus terminal

Austin ISD offers phone and virtual interviews, and you can walk in to a bus terminal between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to inquire. The terminals are Nelson at 7105 Berkman Dr, Saegert at 3300 Jones Rd, and the Southeast terminal at 7200 Bluff Springs Rd, all in Austin.

  4. Clear the screenings after your offer

After a conditional offer you complete the pre-employment battery, which the district covers: a fingerprint-based DPS and FBI criminal-history check (monitored continuously through Texas Rap Back), a DOT 5-panel drug screening, a DOT physical, and Texas's annual DPS-approved physical and mental capability exam.

  5. Earn your CDL at no cost as a paid trainee

School Bus Drivers need a Class B CDL with the P (passenger) and S (School Bus) endorsements. AISD pays you while you train for it, covers the CDL training that private schools charge $2,000 to $4,000 for, and reimburses the CDL fee (up to $69). You must complete the CDL, the Texas certification course, and the district's program within 90 days of hire.

  6. Complete training and start your route

The paid program runs roughly four to six weeks, then new drivers ride with trainers until they know the route. Full-time operators work 183 days a year at a minimum of 8 paid hours a day, with TRS pension plus Social Security, medical and dental coverage, paid personal and sick leave, and paid holidays. Drivers are represented by Education Austin.
