Fort Worth Independent School District serves Tarrant County, anchored by Fort Worth. It is the 10th-largest district in Texas, enrolling about 67,315 students across 134 schools and carrying more than 14,000 of them each school day on a fleet of about 440 buses over roughly 230 routes. The district has run short of drivers for years - it reported about 200 drivers in 2022, down from roughly 300 - and now holds weekly Wednesday hiring fairs from June through December. That demand is the opening for anyone who wants steady work close to home.
Here is the part most people get wrong: you do not need a commercial driver's license to apply. FWISD hires you as a paid Bus Driver in Training at $15 an hour, trains you in its own program, and covers the CDL at no tuition cost. This page lays out the real Fort Worth process - what it pays, what the district covers, and every step from application to your first route.

How to become a School Bus Driver in Fort Worth ISD
The path in order. The guide expands every step with the exact forms, links, and figures for Fort Worth ISD.
Confirm you qualify before you apply
You must be at least 18, hold a valid Texas driver's license, and have a driving record that meets FWISD's safe-driver standards. Texas sets no state driving-experience minimum, so the district sets its own - confirm it with Transportation when you apply. Serious moving violations, DUIs, and recent license suspensions are disqualifying.
Apply online for the Bus Driver role
FWISD posts openings at fwisd.org/careers, which routes into the district's AppliTrack hiring system. Search the title "Bus Driver" - trainee and pool postings appear as "BUS DRIVER (POOL)" and stay open until filled. You do not need a CDL to apply.
Interview by phone, virtually, or in person
The district offers phone and virtual interviews, and you can walk in to any transportation facility between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to inquire, or drop in to a weekly Wednesday hiring fair with on-the-spot interviews and no RSVP. Interviews are practical: they screen for dependable people who will drive safely and manage students.
Clear the screenings after your offer
After a conditional offer, FWISD runs the pre-employment battery, paid for by the district: a fingerprint-based Texas DPS and FBI criminal history check, a DOT 5-panel drug screen, and a DOT physical with a Medical Examiner's Certificate. Texas also requires an annual DPS-approved physical and mental capability exam.
Earn your CDL at no cost as a paid trainee
School Bus Drivers need a Texas Class B CDL with the passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements. FWISD pays you $15 an hour as a part-time Bus Driver in Training while you earn the license in its own air-brake-equipped buses - private CDL schools charge $2,000 to $4,000. Trainee status runs up to 90 days, and the program satisfies the federal Entry-Level Driver Training rule.
Complete training and start your route
FWISD's program runs about 4 to 5 weeks - roughly two weeks of classroom instruction, then range, road, and supervised route training. Once licensed you move into a full-time Bus Driver role: about 183 duty days a year at a minimum of 8 hours a day, with health insurance, TRS pension, and overtime opportunities the district says most drivers take.

Fort Worth ISD bus driver questions
Do I need a CDL to apply in Fort Worth ISD?
No. FWISD explicitly trains applicants who do not hold a CDL and pays them $15 an hour as a Bus Driver in Training. You apply with a regular Texas driver's license, and the district covers your Class B CDL with P and S endorsements at no tuition cost.
How much do FWISD bus drivers make, and what are the hours?
The 2026-27 Compensation Manual sets the grade BD starting minimum at $22.75 per hour, with $15 per hour during training. The full-time role runs about 183 duty days a year at a minimum of 8 hours a day, and the district notes most drivers work overtime. Confirm the live rate on the AppliTrack posting before applying.
What does FWISD pay for during hiring and training?
FWISD covers your CDL training and the pre-employment screening - the fingerprint background check, the DOT drug test, and the DOT physical - and pays you $15 an hour while you train. A private CDL school would cost $2,000 to $4,000 for the license alone, so the district-paid path removes the single biggest barrier to this career.
What's the free CDL study guide?
For a limited time, every district guide comes bundled with a free study guide for your state's CDL Passenger and School Bus endorsements โ the two written tests you'll take. It covers exactly what's on those tests so you can pass the first time, at no extra cost.
Is this an official guide from the school district?
No. It is an independent preparation guide, not affiliated with or endorsed by any school district. It organizes the public information into one clear manual so you do not have to dig for it.
How do I get the guide after I pay?
Instantly. Checkout takes about a minute, then you get a download link on the screen and by email. It is a PDF you can open on any phone, tablet, or computer and keep.
