🎁 Limited-time: + free Texas CDL Passenger & School Bus study guide
Houston Independent School District is the largest district in Texas and the eighth-largest in the country, enrolling roughly 168,000 students across about 270 schools in Harris County. A system that size runs close to a thousand buses and 450 to 500 daily routes, and like most big districts HISD has faced a persistent driver shortage. That shortage is the opening for anyone who wants steady, public-sector work close to home.
Here is the part most people get wrong: you do not need a commercial driver's license to apply. HISD hires you as a paid hourly trainee at $17.00 an hour, teaches you everything, and covers the cost of your CDL. Meet the basic qualifications—a clean driving record and a regular license—and the district trains and licenses you. This page lays out the real Houston process, step by step, and what the job pays once you are driving.

How to become a School Bus Driver in Houston
The path in order. The guide expands every step with the exact forms, links, and figures for Houston ISD.
Confirm you qualify before you apply
You must be at least 18 with a valid Texas driver's license and a driving record that meets the district's safe-driver standards. A high school diploma or GED is preferred but not strictly required. Serious moving violations, DUIs, and recent license suspensions are disqualifying, so know your record before you apply.
Apply online for the Bus Driver role
Applications go through the HISD careers portal at houstonisd.org/careers, which routes into the district's Applitrack system. Search the job title "Bus Driver" - trainee postings appear under the same title. Positions are posted open until filled, so apply when you see one, and have your work and driving history ready.
Interview by phone, virtually, or in person
HISD Transportation offers phone and virtual interviews, and you can also walk in to any of the four transportation compounds between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to inquire. Bus driver interviews are practical: they want to know you will show up every day, drive safely, and stay calm around students.
Clear the screenings after your offer
After a conditional offer, HISD schedules your pre-employment battery: a fingerprint-based Texas DPS and FBI criminal history check, a DOT 5-panel drug screen, and a DOT physical with a Medical Examiner's Certificate. HISD has not published who pays for these screenings, so confirm the current fee policy with Transportation when you apply.
Earn your CDL at no cost as a paid trainee
School Bus Drivers need a Class B CDL with the passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements. Private CDL schools charge $2,000 to $4,000 for this; HISD provides the training free and pays you $17.00 an hour as a trainee while you earn the license and the endorsements.
Complete training and start your route
HISD's paid training program runs about four to six weeks - roughly two weeks of classroom instruction, then range, road, and route training with district trainers. When you finish you move into a regular Bus Driver role: about 181 days a year, minimum 6 paid hours a day, with TRS pension and district health coverage.
