Granite School District is the third-largest district in Utah, enrolling roughly 59,100 students on the west side of the Salt Lake Valley, in communities like West Valley City, Taylorsville, South Salt Lake and Millcreek. A district that size needs a large School Bus Driver workforce, and the west side of the valley has dealt with driver shortages for years. Granite hires through a two-track system, so which posting you pick decides what you need on day one.

Contract Bus Driver postings require a valid CDL with School Bus and Passenger endorsements at application. Hourly Bus Driver postings offer paid training to earn the CDL with the School Bus endorsement, with the training pay rate unpublished. This page lays out both tracks, the contract pay schedule, the union, and the questions to ask Transportation before you apply.

How to become a School Bus Driver in Granite School District

The path in order. The guide expands every step with the exact forms, links, and figures for Granite School District.

  1. Pick your track: hourly with training, or contract with a CDL

Bus Driver - Hourly postings offer paid training to get the CDL with the School Bus endorsement, so you can apply with a regular license. Bus Driver - Contract postings require a valid CDL with School Bus and Passenger endorsements at application. If you do not hold a CDL, apply to the hourly track.

  2. Confirm you qualify

Utah law sets 21 as the minimum age to drive any School Bus. Your driving record must meet the district's safe-driver standard: no more than two moving violations or two accidents, or a combination, in the past 24 months. DUIs and license suspensions are disqualifying. A high school diploma or GED is preferred, not required.

  3. Apply on the Granite Applitrack board

Granite posts bus driver openings on applitrack.com/graniteschools and links to them from graniteschools.org. Postings stay open until filled. Complete the full application and certify your driving and work history accurately. Questions go to Transportation at 385-646-4280.

  4. Clear the screenings after your offer

After a conditional offer you complete a nationwide fingerprint background check (FBI and the Utah Bureau of Criminal Identification) with ongoing RAP-back monitoring, a DOT 5-panel drug screen, and a DOT physical that produces your Medical Examiner's Certificate. Who pays for the physical, fingerprints and drug screen is not published, so confirm before you start.

  5. Earn your Class B CDL with P and S endorsements

On the hourly track the district trains you for the CDL with the School Bus endorsement. You study, pass the knowledge tests, finish behind-the-wheel training in an air-brake-equipped bus, and pass the three-part skills test. The training program length and the training pay rate are not published, so get both from Transportation in writing.

  6. Ride with a trainer, then drive solo

New drivers ride routes with experienced trainers until they know their assigned route, then drive solo. You also earn the Utah School Bus Driver Certification on top of the CDL, with 10 continuing-education credits every year. Contract drivers earn longevity pay of $2,629 after 14 continuous years, plus $725 more after 19.
