Fairfax County Public Schools is the largest school division in Virginia, enrolling roughly 180,000 students in 223 schools. Its transportation operation moves about 131,000 students a day on more than 1,600 buses running nearly 7,000 routes, with more than 1,500 drivers and attendants. Vacancies have eased, yet FCPS keeps hiring and schedules recurring bus driver job fairs through 2027, so there is a standing opening for new School Bus Drivers.

You do not need a commercial driver's license to apply. FCPS states that applicants without a CDL can be trained to earn one, and its paid training program takes you from a regular driver's license to a licensed School Bus Driver in about six to eight weeks. Virginia requires a Class B CDL with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements, which FCPS trains you to earn. This page covers the pay, the sign-on bonus, the process, and what to confirm before you start.

How to become a School Bus Driver in Fairfax County

The path in order. The guide expands every step with the exact forms, links, and figures for Fairfax County Public Schools.

  1. Confirm you qualify before you apply

Virginia sets 18 as the minimum age for School Bus Drivers, and each district sets its own experience standard, so confirm FCPS's current requirement. You need a driving record that meets the district's safe-driver standards. Virginia's DMV statement must show no DUI or drug conviction, no felony conviction, and no alcohol safety program assignment in the past 5 years, and no 2 or more moving violations in the past 12 months.

  2. Apply online for "Bus Driver"

FCPS posts bus driver openings at careers.fcps.edu year-round under the title "Bus Driver." FCPS also runs recurring bus driver job fairs, which are one-stop events where candidates can apply, start fingerprinting and background checks, take a physical, and meet current drivers. No pre-registration is required and walk-ins are welcome.

  3. Interview by phone, virtually, or in person

FCPS offers virtual and phone interviews, and you can walk in to a Transportation compound between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to inquire. Hiring questions go to Human Resources at 571-423-3000. Be ready to show you will show up every day, drive safely, and stay calm around children.

  4. Clear the post-offer screenings

After a conditional offer you complete a fingerprint criminal history check through the Central Criminal Records Exchange to the FBI, a DOT drug screen, and a DOT physical. Virginia also requires an annual school bus driver physical on the state form and a good-moral-character statement signed by two reputable people. FCPS has not published who pays for the screenings, so ask before you start.

  5. Earn your CDL as a paid trainee

FCPS runs a paid training program of usually six to eight weeks, and trainees are paid hourly while they train, though the trainee rate is not published. You earn the Class B CDL with P and S endorsements. Virginia requires non-CDL applicants to complete at least 24 hours of classroom and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training, and the FCPS program wraps those hours in additional classroom time and supervised route training.

  6. Complete training and start your route

After you pass the three-part CDL skills test in a School Bus, you ride routes with experienced trainers until you know yours, then drive solo. Full-time operators move into 180-day assignments of at least 6 hours a day, paid biweekly. Virginia adds two in-service sessions of at least 2 hours each year. Advancement paths include Bus Driver Floater and Bus Driver Supervisor.
