๐ Limited-time: + free Virginia CDL Passenger & School Bus study guide
Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) is the third-largest school division in Virginia, enrolling roughly 81,600 students in 100 schools across one of the fastest-growing counties in the country. Its Transportation Division, based in Leesburg, runs more than 750 buses on more than 500 routes covering about 8 million miles a year. A board presentation showed 556 filled driver positions and a shortfall of roughly 24 drivers after daily absences, and LCPS is still recruiting with a posting titled "Bus Driver ($2,500 Sign-On Bonus)."
You do not need a commercial driver's license to apply. LCPS states that applicants without a CDL can be trained to earn one, and trainees are on payroll while they train. Virginia requires a Class B CDL with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements, which LCPS trains you to earn through monthly training classes. This page covers the pay, the bonus, the 186-day work year, and the questions to settle with Transportation first.

How to become a School Bus Driver in Loudoun County
The path in order. The guide expands every step with the exact forms, links, and figures for Loudoun County Public Schools.
Confirm you qualify before you apply
Virginia sets 18 as the minimum age for School Bus Drivers, and each district sets its own experience standard, so confirm LCPS's current requirement with Transportation. You need a driving record that meets the district's safe-driver standards. Virginia's DMV statement must show no DUI or drug conviction, no felony conviction, and no alcohol safety program assignment in the past 5 years, and no 2 or more moving violations in the past 12 months.
Apply online for "Bus Driver"
LCPS posts openings at lcps.org/careers under the title "Bus Driver," and the current posting carries the sign-on bonus in its title. Positions stay open until filled. LCPS has historically held open houses and one-stop hiring events with on-site interviews, so call Transportation at 571-252-1700 to ask about current events.
Interview by phone, virtually, or in person
LCPS offers virtual and phone interviews, and you can walk in to the Leesburg Transportation Division between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to inquire. Be ready to show you will show up every day, drive safely, and stay calm around children.
Clear the post-offer screenings
After a conditional offer you complete a fingerprint criminal history check through the Central Criminal Records Exchange to the FBI, a DOT drug screen, and a DOT physical. Virginia also requires an annual school bus driver physical on the state form and a good-moral-character statement signed by two reputable people. LCPS has not published who pays for the screenings, so ask before you start.
Earn your CDL as a paid trainee
LCPS runs monthly training classes, and trainees enter payroll at Universal Level 8, Step 1, though the trainee dollar rate is not published. You earn the Class B CDL with P and S endorsements. Virginia requires non-CDL applicants to complete at least 24 hours of classroom and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training, and LCPS provides First Aid and CPR certification during training.
Complete training and start your route
LCPS does not publish a fixed training length; a board presentation showed about two months from application to contract. After you pass the three-part CDL skills test in a School Bus, you ride routes with experienced trainers until you drive solo. Full-time drivers work 186-day assignments of at least 4 hours a day, and Virginia adds two in-service sessions of at least 2 hours each year.
