๐ Limited-time: + free Virginia CDL Passenger & School Bus study guide
Prince William County Public Schools is the second-largest district in Virginia, enrolling roughly 90,629 students across more than 100 schools and centers around Manassas, Woodbridge and Gainesville. More than 60,000 of those students ride a bus each day on a fleet of over 800 buses that covers more than 10 million miles a school year. A system that size always needs more drivers, and the district recruits year-round.
You do not need a commercial driver's license to apply. PWCS hires eligible candidates as substitutes, provides paid CDL training, and converts them to full-time when a slot opens. The district has not published the length of the training program or the hourly trainee rate. This page covers the real Prince William process, what it costs you, and what the job pays.

How to become a School Bus Driver in Prince William County
The path in order. The guide expands every step with the exact forms, links, and figures for Prince William County Public Schools.
Confirm you qualify before you apply
Virginia sets 18 as the minimum age for School Bus Drivers and requires a driving record free of a DUI or drug conviction, a refused chemical test, or a felony in the past 5 years, and no two or more moving violations within 12 months. PWCS sets its own experience standard, and many Virginia districts require age 21, so confirm it with Transportation. A high school diploma or GED is preferred, not required.
Apply online at jobs.pwcs.edu
Search the title "School Bus Driver - 182 Day." The posting stays open on a rolling basis, so you can apply most of the year. Eligible candidates are hired as substitutes and given paid CDL training, converting to full-time when a position opens. Certify your driving and work history accurately.
Interview by phone, virtually, or in person
PWCS offers virtual and phone interviews, and you can walk in to a Transportation center between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to inquire. The centers are McCuin in Bristow (571-402-3902), New Dominion in Manassas (703-361-9808), and Western in Gainesville (571-374-6593).
Clear the post-offer screenings
After a conditional offer you complete a fingerprint criminal history check through Virginia's Central Criminal Records Exchange to the FBI, a DOT 5-panel drug screen, and a DOT physical with a Medical Examiner's Certificate. Virginia also requires its own annual school bus driver physical on the state form and a good-moral-character statement signed by two reputable people.
Earn your CDL through paid district training
You need a Class B CDL with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements before you transport students. PWCS trains applicants who do not have one, pays for the training, and covers the federal entry-level driver training requirement. You study for the written exams, train behind the wheel, and pass the three-part skills test in a school bus. The trainee hourly rate and program length are not published.
Ride with a trainer, then drive your route
New drivers ride routes with experienced trainers until they know their assignment, then drive solo. Full-time drivers work about 182 days a year, minimum 7.5 hours per day, with summers and school breaks off. Confirm the next training class start date when you call.

Does PWCS offer bonuses, benefits and a union?
