Stafford County Public Schools is the eighth-largest district in Virginia, enrolling roughly 31,812 students across 33 schools in the 277-square-mile corridor between Fredericksburg and Washington, DC. The transportation department runs well over 300 fleet units that carry more than 19,000 students and cover over 27,500 miles every school day. The division closed 2024-25 with 243 routes, and it keeps recruiting drivers and attendants for 2026-27.
You do not need a commercial driver's license to apply. Stafford hires you into a paid training program, teaches you for the license, and puts you on a route. The district publishes an 80-hour minimum training program, at least 40 hours in the classroom and 40 behind the wheel, but not the hourly trainee rate. This page covers the real Stafford County process, what it costs you, and what the job pays.

How to become a School Bus Driver in Stafford County
The path in order. The guide expands every step with the exact forms, links, and figures for Stafford County Public Schools.
Confirm you qualify before you apply
Virginia sets 18 as the minimum age for School Bus Drivers and requires a driving record free of a DUI or drug conviction, a refused chemical test, or a felony in the past 5 years, and no two or more moving violations within 12 months. Stafford sets its own experience standard, and many Virginia districts require age 21, so confirm it with Transportation. A high school diploma or GED is preferred, not required.
Apply online through staffordschools.net
Open the Employment section and search the title "Bus Driver." Postings run until filled, and the district's hiring flyer for 2026-27 invites applicants without a CDL. Certify your driving and work history accurately.
Interview by phone, virtually, or in person
Stafford offers virtual and phone interviews, and you can walk in to the Transportation Services facility at 50 Transfleet Drive between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to inquire. Expect practical questions about reliability, safe driving, and handling students.
Clear the post-offer screenings
After a conditional offer you complete a fingerprint criminal history check through Virginia's Central Criminal Records Exchange to the FBI, a DOT 5-panel drug screen, and a DOT physical with a Medical Examiner's Certificate. Virginia also requires its own annual school bus driver physical on the state form and a good-moral-character statement signed by two reputable people.
Earn your CDL through paid district training
You need a Class B CDL with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements before you transport students. Stafford trains applicants who do not have one and pays for the training. The program has about two weeks of classroom instruction before you get behind the wheel, then range and road training. You pass the written exams and the three-part skills test in a school bus.
Ride with a trainer, then drive your route
New drivers ride routes with experienced trainers until they know their assignment, then drive solo. Drivers work about 180 days a year on the school calendar, with summers and holidays off. Call 540-373-6095 for the next training class start date.

Stafford County Public Schools bus driver questions
Do I need a CDL to apply to drive for Stafford County Schools?
No. Stafford County Public Schools states that applicants without a CDL can be trained to get one, and the district pays for that training. If you already hold a Class B CDL with P and S endorsements, it helps, but it is not required.
How much do Stafford School Bus Drivers make, and what are the hours?
The 2026-27 hiring flyer lists a starting rate of $25.35 per hour on Pay Grade B101. The hourly trainee rate during paid training is not published.
Does Stafford offer a sign-on bonus, and what are the benefits?
Yes. The current hiring flyer advertises a sign-on bonus of $500 to $3,000 for drivers and attendants, with the amount based on job role and prior experience, and it lists no expiration date. Confirm the terms when you apply. Benefits include Virginia Retirement System access and district health and dental plans, though eligibility for 180-day hourly drivers is not spelled out publicly, so ask HR at 540-658-6000. Stafford has not authorized collective bargaining for bus drivers.
