๐ Limited-time: + free Florida CDL Passenger & School Bus study guide
Brevard Public Schools is the tenth-largest district in Florida and roughly the 49th-largest in the country, anchored by Melbourne. It enrolls about 73,577 students across 84 schools and puts 20,719 of them on a yellow bus every school day. A fleet of more than 450 buses runs on drivers, and BPS has carried a persistent shortage, cited at roughly 90 openings in recent years. That gap is the opening for anyone who wants steady public-sector work close to home.
Brevard hires differently from most Florida districts: it runs a permit-first pipeline. You apply already holding a CDL Class B temporary permit with the passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements, and BPS provides the rest of the training, earning you the full CDL within 30 days of hire. The district also waived its pre-employment drug-screening and fingerprinting fees back. This page lays out the real Brevard process, what it costs you, and what the job pays.

How to become a School Bus Driver in Brevard County
The path in order. The guide expands every step with the exact forms, links, and figures for Brevard County.
Confirm you qualify before you apply
You need at least 5 years of licensed driving experience (any state counts), a valid Florida driver's license, and a record that meets the district's safe-driver standards. DUIs, recent suspensions, and a pattern of serious violations are disqualifying. A high school diploma or GED is preferred but not strictly required.
Hold your CDL Class B permit with P and S endorsements
Brevard is permit-first: when you apply you must already hold a CDL Class B temporary permit with the passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements. You study the free Florida CDL Handbook, pass the written tests, and hold the permit through its required period. BPS provides the behind-the-wheel training that gets you to the full license.
Apply online for "Bus Driver"
Applications go through brevardschools.org (Careers tab), which routes into the district's BEACON system. Postings appear as "BUS DRIVER" and are generally open until routes are filled. Have your last five years of work history ready.
Interview by phone, virtually, or at a compound
BPS offers virtual and phone interviews, or you can walk in to any of the four area transportation compounds between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to inquire. Bring your driver's license and be ready to describe your driving history accurately.
Clear the screenings after your offer
After a conditional offer you complete a Florida Level 2 fingerprint background check, a DOT drug screen, a DOT physical and Medical Examiner's Certificate, and the district dexterity test (Form ESE 480). The drug-screening and fingerprinting fees have been waived since June 1, 2022.
Complete BPS training and start your route
The district program runs roughly 1-2 weeks, satisfying the federal ELDT rule and Florida's 40-hour preservice minimum, and you earn the full Class B CDL with P and S endorsements within 30 days of hire. Pre-employment training hours are compensated, up to 40 hours at the regular rate, after 90 days of service. You then move into a 180-day, minimum-6-paid-hour role.
