๐ Limited-time: + free Florida CDL Passenger & School Bus study guide
Orange County Public Schools is the eighth-largest district in the country and the fourth-largest in Florida, enrolling roughly 170,000 students across Orlando and the surrounding communities. More than 52,000 of them ride a bus each day on about 517 routes, run by a workforce of roughly 550 drivers. Like most big districts, OCPS almost always has more routes than drivers - it was short about 100 heading into recent school years. That shortage is the opening for anyone who wants steady public-sector work close to home.
Here is the part most people get wrong: you do not need a commercial driver's license to apply. OCPS hires you as a paid hourly trainee, teaches you everything, pays for your CDL training, and puts you on the clock while you learn. Walk in with five years of licensed driving and a clean record, and the district covers the rest. This page lays out the real Orange County process, what it costs you, and what the job pays.

How to become a School Bus Driver in Orange County
The path in order. The guide expands every step with the exact forms, links, and figures for Orange County (OCPS).
Confirm you qualify before you apply
You need at least five years of licensed driving history, a valid Florida driver's license, and a record that meets the district's safe-driver standards. DUIs, recent suspensions, and a pattern of at-fault accidents are disqualifying. A high school diploma or GED is preferred but not strictly required, and Florida's five-year experience rule effectively means most applicants are at least 21.
Apply online for "Bus Operator, Hrly Trainee"
OCPS posts openings at ocps.net/career-opportunities-home, which routes into the iCIMS job board at classified-ocps.icims.com. Search the title "Bus Operator" (trainee postings read "BUS OPERATOR, HRLY TRAINEE"). Positions stay open until routes are filled, so you can apply most of the year. Complete the full application and certify your history accurately.
Interview by phone, virtually, or in person
OCPS offers virtual and phone interviews, and you can also walk in to any Transportation compound between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to inquire or pre-apply before a job fair. Bus operator interviews are practical: they want to know you will show up every day, drive safely, and stay calm around children.
Clear the screenings after your offer
All screenings happen after a conditional offer, and OCPS covers the pre-employment costs. That means a Florida Level 2 fingerprint background check through FDLE and the FBI, a DOT 5-panel drug screen, a DOT physical with a Medical Examiner's Certificate, and the district dexterity test (Form ESE 480).
Earn your CDL at no cost as a paid trainee
School Bus Drivers need a Class B CDL with the P (passenger) and S (School Bus) endorsements. You study the Florida CDL Handbook, pass the written tests for a learner's permit, then train behind the wheel in OCPS buses, which are air-brake equipped. The district's program satisfies the federal ELDT rule, and trainees start on the clock at 40 hours a week. Private CDL schools charge $2,000 or more for this; OCPS provides it free.
Complete training and start your route
Florida's floor is 40 hours of preservice training; OCPS runs roughly 4 to 5 weeks, covering the state curriculum, routes, CPR and first aid, and supervised route training. You then ride with trainers until you know your route and drive solo. Full-time operators work 191 days a year, minimum 6 paid hours a day, with FRS retirement, $0-cost employee health insurance, and OESPA representation.

Orange County (OCPS) bus driver questions
Do I need a CDL to apply to drive for OCPS?
No. This is the biggest misconception about the job in Orange County. OCPS hires you first as a paid hourly trainee, then trains and licenses you and covers every training cost, including the CDL. You earn a wage the entire time you are learning.
How much do OCPS bus drivers make, and what are the hours?
The most recent district-sourced starting figure is $17.29 per hour; a 2022 posting advertised benefited pay of $16.65 to $19.98 depending on experience. The regular Bus Operator role is a 10-month, 191-day job with a minimum of 6 paid hours per day, worked as a split shift. Field trips and activity runs are available for extra paid hours.
Does OCPS offer any hiring bonuses?
The district has used shortage incentives: a recent agreement paid eligible drivers up to $8,000 per school year ($16,000 over two years), tied to attendance, and the district reported negotiating further incentives afterward. Bonus programs come and go with the shortage, so ask Transportation Employee Services whether any are in effect for the current year.
What's the free CDL study guide?
For a limited time, every district guide comes bundled with a free study guide for your state's CDL Passenger and School Bus endorsements โ the two written tests you'll take. It covers exactly what's on those tests so you can pass the first time, at no extra cost.
Is this an official guide from the school district?
No. It is an independent preparation guide, not affiliated with or endorsed by any school district. It organizes the public information into one clear manual so you do not have to dig for it.
How do I get the guide after I pay?
Instantly. Checkout takes about a minute, then you get a download link on the screen and by email. It is a PDF you can open on any phone, tablet, or computer and keep.
