Seminole County Public Schools is the twelfth-largest district in Florida, moving about 32,000 students a day across roughly 400 routes from a fleet of more than 400 buses, anchored in Sanford. The district runs around 8,500 field trips a year on top of daily routes, and like most Central Florida districts it has been short drivers for years. That shortage is the opening for anyone who wants steady work on the school calendar.

Here is the part most people get wrong: you do not need a commercial driver's license to apply. SCPS trains applicants from a regular driver's license all the way to a licensed School Bus Driver and covers the cost of that CDL training. Come in with five years of licensed driving and a clean record, and the district handles the rest. This page lays out the real Seminole County process, what it costs you, and what the job pays.

How to become a School Bus Driver in Seminole County

The path in order. The guide expands every step with the exact forms, links, and figures for Seminole County.

  1. Confirm you qualify before you apply

You need at least five years of licensed driving experience, a valid Florida driver's license, and a record that meets the district's safe-driver standards. A high school diploma or GED is preferred. Serious moving violations, DUIs, and license suspensions are disqualifying.

  2. Apply online for the "Bus Driver" role

Applications go through the SCPS careers portal at careers.scps.k12.fl.us. Search the title "Bus Driver." Positions post as open until filled, so you can apply through most of the year. Complete the full application and certify your driving and employment history - accuracy matters.

  3. Interview by phone, virtually, or at a compound

SCPS offers phone and virtual interviews, and you can walk in to a transportation compound between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to inquire. The main compound is in Winter Springs at 822 E State Road 434; a second published site is Midway at 2310 E FL-46 in Sanford. Call 407-320-7550 for the compound nearest you.

  4. Clear the screenings after your offer

All screenings happen after a conditional offer, and the district covers the pre-employment costs. That means a Florida Level 2 fingerprint background check (FDLE and FBI), a DOT 5-panel drug screening, a DOT physical, and the district's dexterity test (Form ESE 480).

  5. Earn your CDL at no cost

School Bus Drivers need a Class B CDL with the P (passenger) and S (School Bus) endorsements. You pass the written tests for a learner's permit, then train behind the wheel in SCPS buses, which are air-brake equipped. Private CDL schools charge $2,000 to $4,000 for this; SCPS covers it as part of its training program.

  6. Complete training and start your route

SCPS runs a roughly two-week program built on top of Florida's required curriculum, then puts new drivers on routes with experienced trainers until they know the run. Full-time operators work 186 days a year at a minimum of 6 hours a day, with FRS pension participation and a 2025-26 bonus schedule that includes perfect-attendance pay up to $400 a year, a $300 lead-driver supplement, and a $400 professional-development supplement. Drivers are represented by the SCSBDA.

What do SCPS bus drivers make, and are there bonuses?

The most recent district figure is about $20.03 per hour to start; confirm the live rate when you apply. The role is a 186-day, 10-month position with a minimum of 6 hours a day. How long is training, and what does it cost me?

SCPS runs a roughly two-week program, and the district covers CDL training and the pre-employment screening (fingerprinting, drug test, and DOT physical). It's worth confirming whether the training hours themselves are paid when you call Transportation at 407-320-7550.
